Dignitary Protocols
Harvard University regularly hosts distinguished visitors of many different nationalities, backgrounds, and beliefs. In doing so, the University encourages intellectual and educational enrichment while also honoring the principles of free speech and open inquiry that are appropriate and essential to an institution of higher learning.
Harvard Schools, departments, centers, institutes, programs, or organizations seeking to invite a dignitary to campus should contact the University Marshal’s Office before issuing an invitation. With 13 schools across Harvard, the Marshal’s Office tracks invites and can advise about other offers to visit that have been extended or are in the planning stage.

Student Organizations
Student organizations on campus must follow additional protocols when planning high-profile visits. Review protocols for student organizations.
Security
High-profile guests are often accompanied by their own security detail or assigned federal protection (Secret Service, Diplomatic Security, etc.). In order to ensure compliance with local laws and proper coordination with campus authorities, it is required that visit sponsors/hosts work with Harvard University Police Department’s Dignitary Protection Unit to coordinate all security aspects of the visit. In addition, any associated security costs, which can be considerable, are to be borne by the visit sponsor/host. When in doubt, please consult with the Marshal’s Office, and we can advise and connect you with HUPD’s Dignitary Protection Unit ahead of the visit.
Additional Guidelines
Please refer to the Office of General Counsel’s guidelines regarding political activities on campus.
